The High-Altitude Medicinal Herb Identification Training at Patlikuhal and Marhi from July 26 to August 15, 2024, by the Bangalore Tibetan Medical and Astro. College.
- Introduction:
On July 29, Dr. Tsering Norbu, the chairman, Medical & Astro council along with Dr. Phuntsok Tendar and Dr. Tseten Migyur from the Materia Medica Department arrived. They were joined by Dharamsala Mentseekhang Lecturers Dr. Migmar and Dr. Penpa Dhondup, Dharamsala pharmacist Dr. Dorjee Tsering with 11 staff members, Chauntra pharmacist Dr. Tashi with ten pharmaceutical staff, and Bangalore Mentseekhang College lectuer Dr. Pema Namdol. In total, there were eight doctors, twenty one staff members, ten medical students from Dharamsala College, seven medical students from Bangalore College, two drivers, and a cook, making a total of 49 participants.
- Travel Details:
The journey began on July 26, 2024, at 9 AM from Bangalore College. Traveling by Ola, Metro, and train, they arrived in Delhi on the morning of 28th July. That evening, we took a public bus and reached Patlikuhal safely on the morning of July 29. The Dharamsala lectures, students, and staff arrived safely that afternoon. Due to the Patlikuhal school’s best rooms being lent to Nyingma monks for training, the doctors and teachers stayed in classrooms with the pharmaceutical staff.
On July 31, at 6 AM, they left Patlikuhal school and arrived at Marhi around 8 AM. That day was spent setting up tents, creating water channels, and preparing living quarters.
- Medicinal Herb Introduction:
On July 30, Dr. Tsering Norbu led a group to the outskirts of Patlikuhal village, where he introduced 61 medicinal herbs to the students and teachers from Dharamsala and Bangalore, explaining their names, habitats, classifications, and characteristics.
From August 1 to 5, the group was divided into teams to collect herbs from different mountain ranges. Each day, they collected and identified numerous medicinal herbs, with Dr. Tsering Norbu providing detailed explanations to the students.
On August 6, students prepared for their exams while the pharmaceutical doctors collected 100 medicinal herbs for the test.
On August 7, medical students held exam was conducted with 100 medicinal herbs.
During this excursion, Dr. Tsering Norbu introduced over 250 medicinal herbs found at altitudes between 2050 and 4000 meters to three teachers, seventeen students from Dharamsala and Bangalore classes, and two pharmaceutical doctors. Many herb samples were collected and are being preserved on paper for drying.
The herb collection trips typically lasted from 7 AM until 3 or 4 PM. The three medical teachers from both colleges received comprehensive introductions to almost all medicinal herbs growing in the Manali area, along with guidance on how to teach and test students on this subject in the future.
- Challenges:
On 1st August, around 3:30 AM, a severe storm caused water to enter the tents of pharmaceutical staff and students, creating some difficulties. However, by about 5 AM, the storm subsided, and no significant harm came to people. During this year’s medical field trip, many students and staff members suffered from flu-like symptoms, including fever, sore throat, headache, and breathing difficulties. These issues were managed using both traditional Tibetan medicine and modern Western medicine, which helped alleviate the problems.
