Brief Biography and Achievements of Professor Dr. Dorjee Rabten
Dr. Dorjee Rapten Neshar is born in Kyidong, Central part of Tibet in 1964. After the Chinese occupation of Tibet, he escaped to India with his families in 1969 when he was just five. Dr. Dorjee did his primary & secondary education in Central School for Tibetans in Mussoorie, North India. After completing his All-India Higher Secondary Education in Bachelor of Science in 1981, he joined Tibetan Medical College based in Dharamsala in 1981 much in keeping with his family tradition of Tibetan physician. In March 1987, he completed his 5 years of intensive studies on Tibetan Medical System (TMS) with outstanding results under the highly renowned Master Physician late Mr. Barshi Phuntsok Wangyal & his most learned student Dr. Passang Yonten.
Dr. Dorjee acquired most of his medical initiations & practical experience into the more profound level of health & healing through late Dr. Tenzin Choedrak (the former chief physician to His Holiness The XIV Dalai Lama) while working with him sometime as his interpreter, translator & as an accompanying physician during the late physician’s frequent trip abroad. He also received higher teachings from the most celebrated late Dr. Choedrak himself.
In 1988, he took charge of the Tibetan Medical & Research Centre in Bylakuppe, South Tibetan Settlement where he also began his first stint into the clinical research as part of an obligation to the special fund received from the late Mr. peter Summer from England. While in Bylakuppe, Dr. Dorjee has expanded his medical service base to nearby Indian towns & cities notably Mysore & Bangalore. And in June 1991, encouraged by the positive healing benefits of Tibetan Medicine on local Indian & particularly, in the treatment of cancer, Bangalore based Indian pharmaceutical company called Kemwell International Pvt Ltd came forward to sponsor Dr. Dorjee to set up a Medical Centre in Bangalore city with an initial grant of 5 lakh Indian Rupees earmarked for the cancer research project. Dr. Dorjee was then appointed as the chief medical officer in charge & the senior consulting physician of the Bangalore Branch Medical Centre. Fortunately, the hospital was inaugurated by His Holiness The Dalai Lama himself in December 1997.
With over 30 years of dedicated service in the practice of Tibetan Medicine, he has attended many National & International Conferences; presented many papers on Tibetan Medicine & has number of published articles to his credit. Tibetan Medical Institute (Men-Tsee-Khang) in 1992 has published his first book in Tibetan on “Comparative study on HIV/AIDS in the context of Tibetan Medical System”. Dr. Dorjee also helped revising Men-Tsee-Khang’s publication of the 2nd edition of “Fundamentals of Tibetan Medicine” in 1997. And he is also a member of the peer review committee for the ongoing translation of “Four Great Tantra” the most authoritative & classical text on Tibetan Medicine. Dr. Dorjee travels worldwide in giving talks & consultation on Tibetan Medicine.

- Clinical case studies on the efficacy of TM on 31 Stomach cancer patients in South Tibetan Settlement, 1989 – 1990. Work not published. Submitted as an official record for the Department of Health, CTA, Men-Tsee-Khang & for late Peter Summer from England).
- Efficacy of Traditional Tibetan Medicines against Diabetes Mellitus, 1995 –1998. Presented at the 1st International congress on Tibetan Medicine, Washington DC Nov 7-9, 1998. Published by Men-Tsee-Khang’s sMan-rTis Journal, Volume 2, No.2, 2000.
- Collaborative clinical research studies (with All India Medical Institute of Science, New Delhi) on the efficacies of TM against Non-Insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus, 1997 to December 1999. Published by Clinical Research Department, Men-tsee-Khang, and American Association of Diabetes Mellitus in year 2001.
- Did complementary clinical study on the effects of Tibetan Medicines against HIV/AIDS in 1997. Part of the work was published by “Equilibrer et renforcer” Ministry of SIDDA, Geneva, Switzerland. The paper was also presented on the occasion of 12thWorld AIDS Conference Geneva, June 28 – July 3 1998.
- Preliminary clinical research studies on the efficacy of Tibetan herbal drugs against 256 cancer patients treated at Bangalore, Chennai & Hyderabad (in collaboration with All India Medical Institute, New Delhi) from June 1999 –Nov 2002. The case was presented to the National Conference on Cancer care & Management, through Alternative Therapy, 9th to 12th April 2003, Washington DC, USA. Few cancer cases from this work are currently under the study of CAM, best case series, NCI Washington DC. This work was published in the souvenir book as per the request made by the Lakshmi memorial cancer research foundation, Hyderabad, India, on the occasion of 2nd International conference on Complementary Therapies in Cancer care & management, 10th Feb, 2004.
In recognition for his outstanding contribution in the field of Alternative Medicines, Dr. Dorjee was awarded Shiromani Gold Medal & Gem of Alternative Medicine in 1995 & 1996 respectively from the Indian Board of Alternative Medicine, Calcutta. He also received the International Award of Excellence, from American Organization of Intellectuals INC. New York, USA for the outstanding service and excellence in the field of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. He is also a recipient of the Prestigious Award of Achievement and Excellence in the Health service from CTA, Dharamsala in year 2015.
Currently, Dr. Dorjee is the Principal and Medical Superintendent of the Men-Tsee-Khang (Sowa-Rigpa) Medical College & Hospital since 2022. He worked as a Chief Physician at Bangalore-based Men-Tsee-Khang branch clinic for over 25 years and successfully treated many chronic patients through Tibetan Medicine. He also initiated and organized medical camps every year with various NGOs to other Southern states of India.
